James Wade Robbins, 61 dies at local hospital Mon. Night County Health Officers take precautions to prevent spread.
James  Wade Robbins, 61, a farmer of Route 2 Andalusia, died in an Andalusia Hospital, monday night, Jun 22 at nine thirty o'clock. Mr. Robbins, a native of Covington County and a active member of the Primitive Baptist church, was stricken with meningitis during the early fore-noon Monday. His condition worsened as the day progressed and he was rushed to Covington Memorial Hospital by Benson Ambulance late monday evening.
Dr. C. D. McLeod, County Health officer, stated Tuesday that the cause of Robbins' death, as diagnosed by him and four local physicians was Meningococcus Meningitis.
According to Dr. McLeod this form of Meningitis has one of the highest mortality rates of any disease known to medical science.
It is highly contagious and attacks the human body through the throat and nasal organs.
Dr. McLeod stated that he was at a lost as to how Mr. Robbins contracted the dreaded disease but that he did not believe that the county was threatened by an epidemic from this initial and isolated case. County health officials and local physicians are taking all precautions possible to prevent a spread of the disease and all persons known to have been in contact with the victim have been given prophylactics. The preventive treatment consist of 44 tablets to be taken every 4 hours by persons thought to be exposed, and all neighbors, relatives, medical attendants and the personnel of Benson's Funeral Home which came in contact with the victim are taking these preventive measures.
Dr. McLeod emphasized the fact that Mr. Robbins had recently been down in Florida on a ?? trip and said it was in ?? vicinity that he probably ?? the meningitis germ. He said that he did not feel that people in this section should become unduly alarmed. he did say however, that anyone becoming ill should contact their physician immediately.
Mr. Robbins was living on the Eldridge Adams place near Antioch at the time he was stricken.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. George Robbins and his wife Alva Robbins, both of Route 2, Andalusia; one son, Harold of Summerdale, Ala; one daughter, Virginia of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, H.P. Robbins, Andalusia, Route 3, and Edward Robbins, Andalusia, Route 6; three sisters, Mrs. Ester Henderson, Andalusia; Mrs. Bessie Wainwright, Route 2 Andalusia, and Mrs. Laura Taylor, Moultrie, Ga.
